Automatic Transmissions

Transmissions are the important part which allows engine to work with a wide range of speeds. The transmissions have evolved from manual to automatic transmission. Can you imagine a vehicle with out transmission then it would be like driving a car with only third gear or there would be no acceleration while starting the engine and engine would be noise like hell at high speed. Automobile automatic transmission has more advantage then manual one. The main advantage of the automatic transmission gears is that they make proper use of the torque produced by the engine to keep the engine working at a correct speed.

Since 1950, automatic transmission was available in most of the vehicles in United States. Manual transmission is still popular in Europe with more than 70% of drivers prefer to use manual one to automatic one. Easy to drive is one of the main reason that automatic transmissions is gaining popularity in United States since 1990 they are also in demand in Asian countries too. General Motors, Ford, Chrysler, Honda and Nissan provide one the best automatic transmission cars and vehicles in the world.

The history of first modern automatic transmission starts from gearbox developed in 1904, which had the problem of sudden failure without any warning. In 1908, Henry Fords Model T which further moved the manual transmission to a further level. Then later in 1934 a semi automatic transmission was developed which is was very easy to handle compared to manual transmission. All these transmission used a clutch to engage the engine with the transmission but General Motors developed the first Automatic Safety Transmission with a power-shifting planetary gearbox that was hydraulically controlled and was sensitive to road speed.
